Disappointing and snobbish This Siri Hustvedt book was a great disappointment as I loved the summer without men. I had to read this book for a book club (which then never happened) and if it hadn’t been for that, I would probably have given up in the first 10 pages. But I fought on.The premise of the book is interesting: is it easier for men to succeed in the Art world? Do women attract less attention? And a lot of critics who probably didn’t get past there quickly made the analogy with Siri and Paul Auster’s life and work. And you do wonder if there are other similarities: the arty, Upper East Side, super gifted family. The children who are all “special”, i.e. gifted and weird, who grow up to be adults who swank around the super privileged New York world with artistic careers and no real professional lives because they have all this money.So half-way through, from a depressed Spanish economy with friends working for tidbits and fighting to pay their mortgages month after month, I realized I really didn’t care for the characters' "état d'âmes" and whether this women suffers as an artist. I found the excerpts from the diaries tedious at best and her relationship with the artist who cons her completely uninteresting.However I finished the book. I always hope books will have a redeeming feature and this one did. The last 10 pages are sublime and surprisingly I felt quite bereft when the protagonist died. But this book is definitely going to the second-hand bookshop. Portrait of an Artist as an incandescent woman. Cannot recommend this highly enough.
